Why facial implants?
If you would like to change the contours of your face, you might want to consider implants. They can improve proportion and profiles and correct imbalance caused by injury or hereditary traits. Facial implants are inserted in front of the bone of the cheek, chin, jaw, or other areas of the face.

Am I a good candidate?
The best facial implant candidates are patients whose skin has loosened around the face, with the surrounding skin retaining enough elasticity to be repositioned successfully. A weakened jaw line, or the appearance of reduced bone structure, can be improved with facial implants. Implants may also work in other areas of the face.

Surgical Procedure
Insertion of a chin implant may take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. During the procedure, the surgeon selects the proper size and shape implant to enhance your appearance and inserts it into a pocket over the front of the jawbone. The small incision to create the pocket and insert the implant is placed inside the mouth (along the lower lip) or in the skin just under the chin area.
Usually, the chin is taped after surgery to minimize swelling and discomfort. Sutures in the skin will be removed in five to seven days. If an intra-oral incision is used, the sutures will dissolve.

Cheek Surgery
Cheek implant surgery usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes. When cheek implants are being placed in conjunction with another cosmetic procedure, such as a facelift, forehead lift or eyelid surgery, the implants may be inserted through the incisions made for those procedures. Otherwise, an incision will be made either inside your upper lip or your lower eyelid. A pocket is then formed and an implant is inserted.

Cheek implants

After surgery, a dressing will be applied to minimize discomfort and swelling. The severity and duration of such side effects may vary, especially if another cosmetic procedure was performed at the same time.

Lower-Jaw Surgery
Insertion of a jaw implant usually takes about one to two hours. Internal incisions are made on either side of the lower lip to provide access for creating a pocket into which the lower-jaw implant can be inserted. Dissolving sutures are used to close the incisions.

Recovery

Moving your mouth may be difficult for up to a week. Your chin and neck may be black and blue. The doctor will instruct you to limit activity, set a dietary plan, and give you dental hygiene guidelines. Stitches will be removed within seven days. If the incision is made inside the mouth, the stitches will dissolve.

Moving your mouth, eyes, and lips may be difficult during recovery. Your surgeon will instruct you to limit activity and set dietary guidelines.

Jaw Implant Recovery
Moving your mouth may be difficult for about seven days. Movement will improve during the next few months. Your jaw may be black and blue. Your surgeon will instruct you to limit activity, set a dietary regimen, and give you dental hygiene guidelines. Stitches will dissolve in about seven days. After surgery, the jaw will continue to swell for up to 48 hours. There may be a low level of swelling for several months after the procedure.

Your results: Almost immediate, initial swelling should subside in 2-4 weeks and dissipate in 1-2 months as final results appear.

Risk & Complications
As with any surgery, there is a risk of complications related to infection or reaction to anesthesia. In extreme cases, infection will require removal and reinsertion of the implant. You can avoid most complications by selecting a qualified, experienced plastic surgeon and by following pre- and postoperative instructions. With proper precautions by the surgical team, complications are typically minimized or prevented.
